Bone Broth Hot Chocolate or Hot Carob
My toddler used to chug warm bone broth, spoon my broth-based soup into her mouth, and eat half frozen broth with a spoon.
Times have changed and she doesn’t drink it so effortlessly now.
So I’m getting creative (big part of parenting, am I right?!) because broth is such a valuable way to give her nutrient-dense bioavailable gelatin, vitamins, minerals, and collagen. Plus it aids in sleep.
And my latest sneak is adding broth to hot chocolate or in her case, hot carob (because I don’t give her chocolate yet because I am and imagine she is sensitive to the caffeine in chocolate).
And you and I both know that she doesn’t need any caffeine for energy and to push back her 8 pm bedtime!
What is carob? It’s a tropical fruit that when roasted has a flavor similar to chocolate but is naturally sweet not bitter like chocolate.
Prep Time: 10 minutes Serves: 2
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup your easy homemade chicken bone broth (recipe HERE)
2 cups whole milk (for my daughter it’s raw goat milk because she reacts to cow milk)
2-4 Tablespoons roasted carob powder or unsweetened powdered cacao (depending on how rich you want it)
1 teaspoon maple syrup or other natural sweetener (maybe more if you’re using cacao)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 pinch sea salt
DIRECTIONS:
Strain broth into a small saucepan, and bring to a boil.
Add all other ingredients while whisking.
Once steaming, turn off heat.
Whisk one last time then add to two mugs.
Enjoy and feel great knowing that your kids are being nourished by a winter favorite.
Tip 1: Use an immersion blender at the end to make sure all broth and carob/chocolate powder is well integrated.
Tip 2: If you love chocolate but don’t want to lay awake at night, try half cacao powder and half carob.
Tip 3: For a minty twist, add one mint teabag to the cold broth, then bring it to a boil, and remove tea bag before adding other ingredients.
